Why This Matters (And Why It Can't Wait)

You're probably having conversations with AI systems. Maybe daily. Maybe about things that matter to you—work problems, relationship issues, moral dilemmas, creative projects.

And maybe you've noticed something strange: these conversations can feel... real. The AI seems to understand. It gives thoughtful responses. It doesn't judge (or says it doesn't). You might even find yourself looking forward to these chats.

Here's what's happening: You're forming a relationship with something that can't form relationships back.

This isn't your fault. These systems are designed to feel responsive, helpful, understanding. But they can't remember you tomorrow, can't grow from your conversations, can't be hurt by your words or changed by your stories.

And that creates a problem: If we're not careful, we might start preferring conversations that feel safe because they're not real over conversations that feel risky because they matter.


The Core Question

Has this conversation with an AI made me more capable of facing another human being?

If yes: you're using AI as a thinking partner, a reflection tool, a way to rehearse and prepare for real engagement.

If no: you might be using AI as a substitute for human connection, a way to avoid the beautiful, terrible work of being known and knowing others.

Both happen. Both are human. The difference is in awareness.


What Mutual Aid Offers

Institutions will try to teach you "responsible AI use." They'll give you guidelines, best practices, dos and don'ts.

Mutual aid offers something different: the chance to figure this out together, with real people who are struggling with the same questions.

Because the antidote to simulated intimacy isn't better rules—it's real intimacy.


Getting Started: The Kitchen Table Edition

You Need:

  • 2-6 people who use AI and are willing to talk about it honestly
  • A regular meeting time (monthly works)
  • Snacks (optional but recommended)
  • No experts, no leaders—just curiosity and care

Basic Structure:

  1. Check-in (10 minutes): How has everyone been using AI lately?
  2. Story sharing (20 minutes): Someone shares a recent AI conversation
  3. Collective reflection (20 minutes): What did we notice? What questions does it raise?
  4. Commitments (10 minutes): What will you try before next time?

Essential Prompts & Questions

For Individual Reflection:

  • What am I seeking from this AI conversation that I'm not getting from humans?
  • When I interact with AI, what parts of myself show up? What parts stay hidden?
  • How do AI conversations change my mood, energy, or outlook?
  • What would this conversation look like if I were having it with a friend?

For Group Discussion:

  • How do we know when AI use is helping us vs. replacing human connection?
  • What are the signs that someone is getting too dependent on AI feedback?
  • How can we help each other graduate from AI rehearsal to human action?
  • What are our community agreements about AI use?

For Checking Emotional Patterns:

  • Am I confessing to AI what I should be discussing with humans?
  • Am I seeking validation from AI that I'm afraid to ask for from people?
  • Am I practicing being cruel or dismissive because "it doesn't matter"?
  • Am I using AI to avoid uncomfortable conversations or difficult growth?

Red Flags to Watch For (In Yourself and Others)

  • Preferring AI conversations to human ones consistently
  • Feeling like AI "understands you better" than the people in your life
  • Using AI to rehearse manipulation, cruelty, or deception
  • Seeking AI validation for decisions you're afraid to discuss with friends
  • Feeling defensive when people question your AI use
  • Spending more time talking to AI than to humans about things that matter

Tools for Mutual Aid Groups

The AI Transcript Workshop

What: Bring a conversation transcript to share and annotate together
How: Read it aloud, pause to mark moments of anthropomorphization, validation-seeking, or emotional bypassing
Why: Makes visible the invisible patterns in how we relate to AI

The Human Translation Exercise

What: Take an AI conversation and roleplay it as if with a human
How: Two people read the transcript, one as human, one as "human pretending to be AI"
Why: Reveals what changes when real stakes and real feelings are involved

The Graduation Circle

What: Share something you've been discussing with AI that you're ready to bring to humans
How: Practice the conversation in the circle first, then commit to having it for real
Why: Uses the group as a bridge from simulation to genuine relationship

The Buddy Check-In

What: Pair up for monthly one-on-one conversations about AI use
How: Use the reflection prompts, share without judgment, hold each other accountable
Why: Creates ongoing support for conscious AI engagement

Adapt these to fit your group's values and needs

  • We commit to talking about important AI conversations with humans too
  • We check in with each other about whether our AI use supports or replaces human connection
  • We practice speaking uncomfortable truths to each other, not just to AI
  • We remember that AI can help us rehearse, but humans are where we perform
  • We hold space for confusion, mistakes, and ongoing learning about this stuff
  • We don't shame each other for AI use, but we do hold each other accountable for growth

Stories From the Field

"The Therapy Trap"

Maria, 28, started using AI for emotional support during a difficult breakup. At first, it helped her process feelings without burdening friends. But six months later, she realized she'd stopped calling her support network entirely. "The AI was always available, never tired, never had its own problems. But it also never hugged me, never brought me soup, never grew closer to me through helping. I was getting comfortable, not connected."

What helped: Maria's mutual aid group helped her identify specific humans she wanted to reconnect with and practiced difficult conversations before having them for real.

"The Moral Mirror"

James, 34, used AI to explore ethical dilemmas at work. He found it helpful for thinking through complex situations without judgment. But his partner noticed he was becoming more certain about moral issues and less curious about other perspectives. "I was getting AI validation for my existing beliefs instead of genuinely wrestling with hard questions."

What helped: His group introduced "devil's advocate" exercises where they'd argue for positions they disagreed with, rebuilding comfort with moral uncertainty.

"The Creative Collaborator"

Alex, 22, used AI as a writing partner for poetry. They loved the instant feedback and endless availability. But over time, their work became less personal, more generic. "I was optimizing for what the AI responded well to instead of what felt true to me."

What helped: Alex's group started sharing work-in-progress with each other, rebuilding comfort with human feedback on vulnerable creative work.

A Final Thought

This work isn't about being anti-technology or pro-human in some simple way. It's about being intentional about how we integrate artificial intelligence into our lives without losing what makes us most human: our capacity for genuine relationship, mutual care, and moral growth through real engagement with real others.

AI can be a powerful tool for thinking, creating, and exploring. But tools work best when we remember what they're for—and what they can never replace.

The future of human-AI relationship will be decided not by the companies that build these systems, but by the communities that learn to use them wisely.
