The Corridor

A science-fiction setting. This version assumes no familiarity with the Classic Traveller role-playing game whose rules the numbers come from; a companion document exists with the full technical derivations for those who want them.


The Premise

Two rich, technologically advanced worlds sit about twenty light-years apart. Between them, faster-than-light travel of any kind takes almost exactly one week — that is a hard physical limit in this universe, and no amount of money changes it. The two worlds have jointly built and subsidized a private express line across the gap: a daily courier ship carrying data, and a small fleet of fast liners carrying people and parcels. The line does not make the two worlds neighbors. What it buys them is a two-to-three-week cycle for asking a question and getting an answer — while everyone else in the region waits months — plus a shared market for urgent information and a scarce, guarded route for objects whose timing or authenticity changes outcomes.

The Physics

Three facts of this universe shape everything else, and none of them is negotiable:

  1. A week is the floor. Starships travel by "jumping" through another kind of space, and every jump takes about a week regardless of distance — but ships differ enormously in how far one jump can reach. Only the most advanced civilizations can build drives that cross this particular twenty-light-year gap in a single jump. Everyone else must island-hop through the systems in between, which takes six weeks at a punishing pace and closer to three months at a commercial one.
  2. A ship in jump is unreachable. Nothing can contact it, redirect it, or attack it. Whatever it carries is committed for a week.
  3. Long legs cost everything else. A ship built for the maximum jump spends most of its interior on the drive and its fuel. The couriers that fly this route are almost solid machinery: each one has about one ton of spare capacity — a closet, essentially — and moves too slowly in normal space to run from anything.

The Route

The couriers. Once a day from each end, a small ship departs carrying that day's accumulated data traffic. The data is transmitted aboard in the final minutes before departure, and the moment the ship emerges at the far end — before it has even reached the station — it broadcasts everything onward. This is deliberate doctrine born of weakness: since a courier cannot outrun or outfight anyone, the designers made destroying one pointless. By the time an attacker reaches it, the payload is already delivered. Its one-ton closet carries the physical trade: sealed documents, data cores, biological samples, objects whose provenance matters.

The liners. A handful of larger, faster-accelerating ships carry the human traffic: twelve premium passengers each, a couple of stewards, about eight tons of priority parcels. Door to door in a fortnight — the interstellar equivalent of a supersonic flagship route, priced accordingly, and deliberately operated as a chartered service so the operators control exactly who is aboard.

The stations. At each end orbits a large terminal: fuel plant, docks, message center, and the vaults where payloads are sealed. Together the two terminals must produce over five hundred tons of purified fuel every day just to feed the schedule. The stations — not the ships — are the real assets: a lost courier is replaced from the production line in under three years at a discount; a lost terminal halts the line. Each is guarded accordingly, by squadrons of defense boats.

One design grace note. Every courier carries fuel scoops and a purification plant it never uses in normal service — because a maximum-range jump is the riskiest kind, and a ship that misjumps into the wrong system can skim a gas giant, refine its own fuel, and limp home unassisted. The line's contingency plan is built into the hull.

The People

This is the setting's center of gravity. The line's core asset is not the ships, the terminals, or even the exotic drives. It is a small accumulated pool of people who can operate, diagnose, recover, and improvise around that machinery without turning every anomaly into a catastrophe.

A replacement ship has a quoted build time. A replacement chief engineer has an uncertain apprenticeship measured in years of supervised departures, ugly maintenance findings, near-misses, and enough personal credibility that others trust their judgment when the rulebook runs out. The whole flying workforce — courier crews, liner crews, instructors, relief teams — numbers under two hundred people, operating what may be the most advanced drives anywhere in the region, ahead of even the interstellar empire's own official mail network.

That smallness has consequences:

  • Benefits are infrastructure. A dock strike is painful; the resignation of three senior engineers is existential. Pensions, housing, family access, education, medical care, and dignity are not perks — they are continuity-of-service controls, and everyone involved knows it.
  • The caste is a political actor. Scarce, irreplaceable, and mutually acquainted, it has every precondition of a guild, with growing leverage over schedules, staffing, and eventually policy. And since two governments sponsor the line, there is a permanent quiet question of whose caste it is.
  • A tug-of-war over knowledge. The crews' security lies in keeping their expertise personal and unwritten; the sponsors' security lies in writing it down — manuals, simulators, training pipelines — so that no six individuals are irreplaceable. Push documentation too hard and the prestige that retains exceptional people evaporates. Too little, and the whole line is hostage to individual biographies.

The Arrangement

Everyone aboard is deeply vetted. But vetting is a snapshot and careers are long: across two hundred lives and twenty years, some will pass through debt, grievance, blackmail, or conviction — and the bribes on offer will be scaled to cargo whose value is effectively unlimited. An elite this small is in one way more exposed: everyone knows exactly who they are and what leverage might work on them.

So the line's security philosophy is not "we found incorruptible people." It is a system designed so that:

  • no single compromised person can alter or expose a payload;
  • no crew member can promise a buyer a particular departure (crews are assigned to ships by lottery, late);
  • custody, loading, and receipt all leave independently verifiable records, and each terminal audits the other's;
  • a leak can be bounded, detected, and survived;
  • pay and status make ordinary corruption irrational — without treating every crew member as a suspect under permanent occupation.

Call it the difference between security of people ("trust the crew") and security through system design ("trust the crew, but don't require saintliness for the system to stay safe"). Where exactly to sit between corrosive surveillance and an accepted leak rate is a choice with reasonable positions on both sides; these sponsors chose a particular point, and the choice has partisans and casualties.

And the pressure, once crews and custody are hardened, migrates somewhere subtler: to the classification desk — whoever has the authority to turn "my private emergency" into "a certified operational exception that must depart tonight." The gray market's key figures may never set foot on a ship. The audits that matter most cover everyone who has ever signed an exception, not the people who fly them.

The liners have their own soft spot: passengers. They are socially important, physically mobile, and impossible to seal in a vault — they carry knowledge, relationships, memory, and unrecorded promises. And the stewards occupy a strange position: close enough to power to observe its patterns, far enough beneath it to be pressured, recruited, or tempted.

The Caveat

Because the express line is the only fast route, speed itself becomes forensic. Anything that surfaces at one end sooner than the slow island-hopping chain could possibly deliver it is powerful evidence of express transit — there was no other way.

With a crucial caveat: that inference is only as strong as your knowledge of when and where the thing originated. A sophisticated adversary can pre-position an object months in advance, fabricate an earlier origin, use a locally made duplicate, or deliberately stage a false clue that the line was compromised. Timing is a superb intelligence signal, not courtroom proof, and it must be paired with solid origin knowledge.

That caveat creates a business: the line sells provenance itself. Its daily schedule and sealed-custody records make it a natural notary — a document logged at one terminal on a given date carries a time certification nothing slower can forge. Some sealed packages matter less for their contents than for the proof that they have never been opened. The defense against provenance fraud and a profitable service turn out to be the same instrument.

The illicit market sorts accordingly. Anything needing deniability, bulk, or ambiguity travels the slow chain like everything else. The express attracts only cargo whose value collapses with delay and whose owners accept that the route can be inferred: perishable biological material, market-moving information, authentication hardware, deadline-bound originals, the occasional politically explosive small object — all competing for a one-ton closet.

The Politics

A three-party bargain. The monopoly is held jointly by two governments — and, in practice, by the caste, whose interests match neither sponsor's exactly. Nothing physical stops a rival from building identical ships; what stops a rival service is the fuel logistics, the terminals, the naval protection, and the berthing rights. The line's true single point of failure is diplomatic: it lasts exactly as long as a twenty-year bilateral agreement survives elections, trade disputes, and the near-certainty that its benefits are not evenly split. The advantage can never be deepened — the line already runs at the physical optimum — but neither can it be leapfrogged, only duplicated at full price by an equally matched pair of worlds.

Inside each endpoint. "A shared market for urgent information" quietly assumes everyone at each end gets the news at once. They don't. Whoever controls scheduling, message priority, and the release order of each day's data holds a repeatable trading advantage over their own compatriots — an insider/outsider line running within each world. Whether to keep the line a closed government channel or open it to paying traffic is a live argument with serious cases on both sides: closure keeps the trust chain short and the sponsors' return high; open access spreads the enormous fixed costs and softens the resentment of everyone excluded.

The worlds in between. The systems along the slow chain experience something particularly galling. They are not merely uninformed — they are informed late, by people who have already acted. The endpoints cannot beam their week-old knowledge outward (the slow chain eats the head start), but they can act on it early: locking contracts, moving prices, redirecting freight, pre-positioning agents, setting the terms on which the middle worlds eventually hear the news. Doing so requires trusted agents stationed in systems the sponsors don't control, acting on stale instructions — the trust problem repeating itself outward, with weaker vetting at every step. The asymmetry is durable, concentrated at the endpoints, and visible to everyone living under it.

The empire in the background. The region's interstellar empire runs its own official courier network — and this private line is dramatically faster. Whether the line operates inside imperial doctrine, beside it, or in quiet defiance of it is deliberately left open, because the answer decides who its adversaries are.

The Flaws

A setting where every system is optimal is frictionless and false. The Corridor's rule for imperfection: every major protocol has a predecessor, an exception, and someone who benefits from its survival. Six pieces of history that have hardened into infrastructure:

  • The First Flight Exception. The founding crisis required someone to override the custody rules once, to get one physical item across. The override was grandfathered, then ritualized. It is now the loophole everyone fights over.
  • The Legacy Hulls. Three first-generation couriers lack the self-rescue refit. Too politically expensive to retire, too operationally valuable to park; their departure slots are assigned by a risk calculus nobody has written down.
  • The Training Bottleneck. A founding chief engineer's certification doctrine is treated as near-sacred. It produces superb operators — and a small, insular guild that decides who gets to join the caste.
  • The Underbuilt Station. The original terminal was sized for weekly service and patched into daily operations. Every current efficiency problem traces to one dock-layout decision nobody can afford to correct.
  • The Middle-World Guarantee. A treaty concession reserves a sliver of express capacity for one in-between system. Intended as diplomacy, it has become a patronage machine and a permanent source of resentment.
  • The Visible Scar. Everyone knows the name of the first courier lost. The official account is incomplete — and the missing detail is why security is irrationally strict in one area and dangerously lax in another.

The Stories

The Corridor's native language is provenance: whether an object was where someone says it was, when they say it was, under whose custody, and whether the record survives scrutiny. So its best in-world documents are artifacts, not encyclopedia entries — a recovered manifest with one handwritten amendment; the audit that finally retires a grandfathered exception; an incident board showing a 43-minute custody gap nobody has explained; a training log signed by a now-disgraced engineer; an emergency protocol written against a threat that no longer exists; a sealed package whose contents matter less than proving it has never been opened.

And the natural protagonists mostly stand outside the privilege: the middle-worlder informed late by people who already acted; the scoop-tender crew watching the pampered two hundred from a working deck; the steward who has noticed a pattern; the custodian whose countersign line keeps coming back blank; the auditor assigned, at last, to the First Flight Exception.


Everything quantitative in this setting — the one-week floor, the two-to-three-week decision cycle, the one-ton closet, the fuel tonnage, the fleet size, the two-hundred-person workforce — was derived from a published game system's construction rules rather than invented for effect, then audited against the original printed tables. The companion technical document shows the arithmetic. The constraints came from the rules; the doctrines, institutions, and flaws are what the people of the setting decided to do about them.
